Rental Scams in Silver City

If you're looking for a rental on Craigslist, be on guard. One of our listings was recently highjacked by a scammer. The scammer took our photos, address and property description from Zillow and posted the property on Craigslist for rent. The post advertised a $250,000 house for only $750 a month. Many potential renters were attracted to the ad. The scammer had a bank account set up and was asking for the first month's rent and deposit to be wire transferred to the account. Luckily several people were suspicious and decided to drive by the property. They saw our real estate sign and called or came by the office. We were able to report the scam to Craigslist and called the bank where the account was set up. But these kinds of scams are easy to perpetrate. 

Here are some steps to take to protect yourself from these types of scams:
